SOUTH CHARLESTON, W. Va. – BridgeValley Community and Technical College (BVCTC) is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Nursing Program, marking two decades of preparing the nurses who care for West Virginians in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities across the state.
At a time when West Virginia continues to face a shortage of qualified nurses, BridgeValley’s program stands out as a vital workforce pipeline. Since 2005, the college has prepared hundreds of registered nurses, with the majority remaining in West Virginia to meet growing healthcare demands.
The celebration, held October 10 at The Ruffner in Charleston, honors alumni, faculty, and healthcare partners whose work has shaped the state’s healthcare system.
“For twenty years, BridgeValley’s Nursing Program has produced graduates who embody compassion, skill, and professionalism,” said Kent Wilson, Dean of Nursing and Emergency Medical Services. “Our alumni make a difference every day in communities across West Virginia, and this milestone celebrates both their accomplishments and the faculty who have supported them.”
Among those alumni is Julian Irving, owner and operator of A Special Touch In-Home Care in South Charleston and the event’s presenting sponsor. Irving began his career as a registered nurse before launching a successful senior care business serving the Kanawha Valley and surrounding areas.
“BridgeValley played an important role in my journey,” Irving said. “The education and hands-on experience I received gave me the confidence to grow in the healthcare field and eventually start my own business helping others. The values I learned as a student continue to guide the way I serve my community today.”
The Nursing Program continues to evolve, integrating advanced simulation technology and strengthening partnerships with hospitals and health systems to meet emerging workforce needs. BridgeValley nurses now serve in facilities across the state, helping expand access to care and improve patient outcomes.
