$7,500 WVHEPC grant to provide textbook support, mentoring, and recognition programs

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W. Va. – First-generation college students often face unique challenges, from being the first in their families to navigate higher education to overcoming financial barriers that can derail their success. BridgeValley Community and Technical College is addressing these challenges through 50 Strong: First-Gen Pilot, a new initiative funded by a $7,500 grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC).

The program will provide 50 first-generation students with financial assistance for textbooks and required course materials, easing a major burden during their first semesters. In addition, participants will take part in programming designed to build confidence and celebrate their achievements.

Highlights include a First-Generation Student Success Panel featuring local professionals who were the first in their families to attend college. These role models will share their journeys, tips for success, and the career opportunities that followed their education. The initiative will also feature a First-Generation Student Award Ceremony, where students will be recognized for milestones such as earning certifications, completing semesters, and graduating.

“Being a first-generation student takes incredible courage,” said Ashley Starkey, Director of ASCEND and Support Programs. “With 50 Strong, we’re telling these students that they are not alone, that their hard work matters, and that we will be here to celebrate them at every step of their journey.”

By combining financial support with inspiration and recognition, BridgeValley’s 50 Strong initiative advances statewide priorities to improve student retention, increase degree attainment, and prepare more West Virginians to contribute to the region’s workforce.

The program will launch this fall with its first 50 participants, laying the groundwork for expanded support for future first-generation students at BridgeValley.
